Trey Palmer On TD: 'Moment Wasn’t Too Big For Me'
Kim Klement Neitzel-USA TODAY Sports

The highlight play for the Bucs that came out of their 27-17 preseason opening loss to the Steelers had to be the touchdown scored by rookie receiver Trey Palmer. Quarterback Baker Mayfield connected with Palmer on an eight-yard touchdown reception in the back corner of the end zone to tie the game up at 7-7 with 12:20 to go in the second the second quarter.

It was a great throw by Mayfield to get it just over the outstretched arms of the Steelers defender, but also not too far to take Trey Palmer out of bounds. Palmer’s efforts were even better as he was able to to adjust in the air, make the catch and land in bounds for the score with the defender still on him.

Trey Palmer Recaps The Play

The play looked quite difficult, but it was a breeze to the rookie out of Nebraska. Trey Palmer spoke after the game about how this play was just the norm for him considering he practices these types of situations on a daily basis.

“Really, I just saw the ball and was like, ‘Yeah, this [is] my time, this [is] my time,'” Palmer said.  “The moment wasn’t too big for me or nothing, I do it at practice. I practice contested catches and that’s what I did. I just saw the ball, not even the player. I’m just [making] sure I catch the ball and get my feet down, and that’s what I did.”

Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield gave his own opinion on the play from his vantage point. The most important aspect of the throw was that Mayfield trusted Trey Palmer, a rookie, to come down with it. Palmer has been making plays in the red zone since the rookie mini-camp back in May.

“Trey made an absolutely great catch in the back of the end zone right there,” Mayfield said. “[It was] kind of one of those balls that [there is] a lot of trust right there. We’ve hit on the fact that our young guys are playing well at receiver and Trey did his thing tonight and a lot of other young guys did as well.”

A Big Moment With His Family In The Crowd

Trey Palmer’s NFL preseason debut for the Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium was a special evening. He scored the first touchdown for the Bucs and tied the team with four receptions to go with 33 yards receiving. The best part of it all was that he had the big touchdown scoring moment with his family in the crowd to see him for his first game.

“My mom, she works very hard and never tries to miss a game,” Palmer said. “I just appreciate her for everything she [does] for me and I’m just glad I get to showcase my first game in the NFL and showcase how I can score a touchdown. I’m just thankful for that.”

Palmer finished the night catching all four of his targets for 33 yards. His first NFL catch went for a first down, and then his next went for a touchdown. Not a bad start at all to his Bucs career.
