While his name might not yet be a head-turner for Maple Leafs fans, there are reasons to believe Dewar could be a surprisingly strong pickup for the Maple Leafs. He might be a head-turner come the team’s needs for the postseason.

What Might Make Dewar a Valuable Asset?

The fact is that Dewar is exactly the kind of player I hoped the Maple Leafs would pick up at the trade deadline. He fills a need for the team as they approach postseason competition. Here’s why I think he could become a surprise for this team.

First, Dewar has had a long haul to the NHL. His journey to the NHL began in the junior ranks with the Everett Silvertips in the Western Hockey League (WHL). He served as captain for the Silvertips, which suggests that he has demonstrated leadership qualities. That’s a plus.

Second, he has a ton of experience as a younger player. After the Minnesota Wild selected him in the third round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, Dewar honed his skills in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Iowa Wild. He’s been preparing himself for the challenges of the NHL. For me, that it wasn’t easy is a benefit as well. It instills a work ethic.

For me, that means he can contribute to different aspects of the game, including penalty-killing and defensive responsibilities. These are huge playoff needs for any team that wants to survive the toughness of the context. They might make him a valuable asset for any team.

Can Dewar Bring a Surprise Element for Maple Leafs?

Dewar has played one game with the team. As he continues to play, Maple Leafs’ fans will see what he might bring to the team. It could be a pleasant surprise for fans. Right now, he’s flying under the radar. However, Dewar’s performance this season – he’s set his personal best with 10 goals – hints at the possibility of untapped potential waiting to be shown.

I also see the possibility of re-signing him if he works out. He’s the kind of unassuming player I like. I believe they can emerge as unexpected heroes. Here’s saying that Dewar could become a surprise asset that helps his team move toward the goal of playoff success.

I’m keeping a close eye on his play. I wonder if he might just become a hidden gem who might shine brightest during the playoffs.
